THE TASTE OF POMEGRANATE

Date: 11.03.2023, 19:00

Performative workshop with Afrang Nordlöf Malekian (artist, Sweden) & Iliada Charalambous (artist, Rotterdam)

Pomegranate is a fruit of life, death and rebirth. It can take the form of a golden necklace that a grandmother hid in her bra after the 1979 revolution in Iran. Or it may be peeled and given by another woman to her granddaughter living abroad. In "The Taste of Pomegranate" workshop, participants are invited to prepare pomegranate syrup on a tablecloth printed with images and stories of this precious fruit. The pomegranate introduces participants to the bitter taste of life and death with each stain and seed.

Artist Afrang Nordlöf Malekian engages with lesser-regarded contemporary groups and cultures such as the secret bootleg culture of music in Tehran, non-binary Southwest Asian beauty norms, and Chilean and Iranian leftist movements. They are all forced to organize in exile. Artistically, Malekian explores how narratives, hierarchies, systems, and language disappear, recur, and transform in unexpected ways.

The origin of artist Iliada Charalambous' work lies in current social and political events. On a biographical level, she looks at the relationship of the individual to state politics. Currently, she is exploring the idea of citizens' assemblies and creating spaces for people to exchange ideas about the influence of politics on everyday life and possible forms of resistance

This workshop is part of the series of events "Mingling with Againness" organized by the Leipzig-based initiative Catwings. The series is an invitation to engage with rituals as a collective moment, as a form of knowledge sharing, and as resistance.
