Mensch, tanz!

Date: 14.09.2024 - 14.12.2024

The exhibition presents new works by contemporary artists working with dance and movement, but especially those questioning images of the body conveyed by photography and film. Images are primarily the subject of discussion as media that can both record and shape bodily forms of expression, by promoting and inspiring certain ways of posing, presenting oneself, moving and performing. In their drawings, collages and videos, the exhibited artists reflect on body images from the history of avant-garde body culture and dance, which they place in the context of current discourses on the body.

This exhibition is a satellite of the exhibition "Die Geste spricht" which will be shown at the Bauhaus Museum Dessau in 2024. The Bauhaus Dessau Foundation's exhibition provides insights into the new types of body image and avant-garde dance from the early 20th century. It presents exemplary projects from avant-gardists in gymnastics and dance. In doing so, it locates the body experiments at the Bauhaus in a new way within the context of a multifaceted and contradictory "body culture movement". Parallel to this, contemporary artists Christina Werner (Rhythm is a dancer) and Clément Cogitore (Bodies in Sync) as well as Gerburg Fuchs build on avant-garde experiments of the 1920s with movement workshops and update them in and with their works.
